On Saturday night, a tragic incident unfolded at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Howe Street in Dearborn when a 40-year-old man was intentionally struck by an SUV. The victim was walking in the area at around 10:45 PM on August 23 when he was hit. Responders found him lying unresponsive on the sidewalk, and he remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
The driver of the dark-colored SUV fled the scene immediately after the collision. Witnesses pursued the suspect’s vehicle and later noted that it was abandoned a few blocks away. Shortly thereafter, the suspect—a 38-year-old man—called police and admitted responsibility for the incident, informing authorities that he was waiting at his home to surrender. He is now in custody at the Dearborn Police Department without bond, as prosecutors deliberate on formal charges.
Disturbingly, this is not the first safety concern linked to this case. Victim had reportedly contacted the police just days earlier to report an alleged attack on August 21. The Dearborn Police Department has pledged a thorough investigation into both the hit-and-run incident and victim’s prior interactions with law enforcement.
The community’s concerns underscore the importance of transparency in such investigations and the urgency of preventative measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.
