On the evening of July 6, 2025, a devastating ATV accident occurred at the intersection of Melrose and Pennsylvania avenues in Pontiac, Michigan, resulting in the unfortunate loss of life. The incident, which unfolded around 4:55 p.m., involved a 1987 Yamaha ATV and a 2020 GMC Terrain.
According to reports from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the 25-year-old operator of the ATV, who was traveling east on Pennsylvania Avenue, allegedly disregarded a stop sign at Melrose Street. This reckless act led to a collision with the GMC Terrain, driven by a 37-year-old Pontiac woman, who was traveling northbound through the intersection. Tragically, the ATV’s operator, identified as Anthony Thomas Cowgill of Flat Rock, was fatally injured and later pronounced dead at the hospital. His 31-year-old passenger from Macon, Georgia, survived but sustained injuries requiring hospitalization. Notably, neither Cowgill nor his passenger were wearing helmets, and the ATV was not legal for use on public roads. The driver of the GMC, who was wearing her seatbelt, was unharmed in the crash.
The Oakland County Sheriff has highlighted this incident as a preventable tragedy, emphasizing the critical importance of using proper safety equipment and adhering to traffic rules, particularly when operating off-road vehicles. This accident is part of a larger issue, as data from Michigan reveals that there were 396 crashes involving off-road vehicles in 2023, with 22 of those resulting in fatalities .
