Tragedy struck on Sunday evening when a single-vehicle crash near the Green Oak Township and South Lyon border resulted in the death of a 45-year-old man. According to reports accident occurred around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Doane and Rushton Roads when the man’s SUV veered off the roadway, collided with a tree, and burst into flames.
Green Oak Township Fire Chief Kevin Gentry reported that firefighters worked tirelessly to rescue the man trapped inside the burning vehicle. The intense fire raged on for nearly 20 minutes as first responders battled the flames with multiple hand lines. Despite their valiant efforts, the driver succumbed to his injuries shortly after being extricated and prepared for an emergency survival flight.
The fire proved extremely hazardous for the responding fire crews as well. Six firefighters were evaluated on site for varying degrees of burns, with one requiring hospitalization overnight. Fortunately, that firefighter has since been released and is in stable condition.
Chief Gentry addressed circulating misinformation by clarifying that the SUV involved was not an electric or hybrid vehicle. Instead, the crash’s fiery aftermath stemmed from the force of impact dislodging the gas tank and magnesium components in the SUV.
A staggering 15,000 gallons of water-foam mixture were required to extinguish the blaze and contain the fire. Fire departments from South Lyon, Brighton, and Hamburg Township assisted in the efforts to bring the fire under control.
