A devastating wrong-way crash on US-131 in Allegan County left four people dead and two others seriously injured early Sunday morning. Authorities say the chain of events began when a vehicle exited the highway, made a U-turn at or near the bottom of an off-ramp, and then re-entered the freeway traveling south in the northbound lanes.
The vehicle continued the wrong-way drive for nearly four miles. During that time, it may have sideswiped other vehicles before ultimately colliding head-on with a car traveling in the correct direction.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the wrong-way vehicle—a 38-year-old woman from Grand Rapids—was killed instantly, along with two male front-seat passengers in the other car. Three additional passengers from that second vehicle were hospitalized with severe, life-threatening injuries.
One of the passengers, a teenage girl, died of her injuries overnight.
Investigators are investigating to see if alcohol is a contributing factor in the crash. Police are continuing to review evidence and witness statements to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the collision.
