On Sunday, August 10, 2025, a devastating single-vehicle accident occurred on southbound US-131 near Perry Avenue in Mecosta County, Michigan. The incident claimed the lives of two siblings, 59-year-old Mark Lewis of Kentwood, Michigan, and 61-year-old Tamyra Northern of Prior Lake, Minnesota, as well as their family dog. The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash happened at approximately 12:07 p.m.
Authorities state that the vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, veered off the roadway and struck the overpass before igniting in flames. Emergency responders, including deputies, firefighters, and medics, were dispatched to the scene, but the vehicle was engulfed in fire by the time they arrived. Both victims were pronounced deceased.
Due to the severity of the crash, structural damage to the overpass prompted the immediate closure of the southbound lanes of US-131, with traffic being rerouted to the Perry Avenue off-ramp. Investigators are still working to uncover the exact cause of this tragic accident.
