A tragic accident occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 12, 2025, when a 16-year-old driver in a stolen vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Warren, Michigan, during a police pursuit. The crash led to the death of Alex Habib, a 28-year-old father of two, who was simply driving as an Uber contractor to support his young family. We have written about this a few hours ago, but new updates have emerged and we wanted to update you regarding this event.
Factual Details of the Incident
According to reports, Roseville police attempted to stop a black Hyundai Sonata around 2:40 a.m. near I-94 and Gratiot Avenue after it was identified as recently stolen. The driver refused to stop, initiating a police chase that moved westbound on I-696 and continued onto Hoover Road before ending at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue. The teen driver ran a red light and collided with Alex Habib’s Ford Fusion.
Alex Habib was transported to the hospital with critical injuries but succumbed shortly thereafter. Tragically, he left behind a wife, a 1-year-old daughter, and a 3-month-old son. Habib was described by family and colleagues as caring, hardworking, and dedicated to his family, balancing two jobs at Jim Brady’s Restaurant and his Uber shift to provide for his loved ones. A GoFundMe page has been created for his family.
The pursuit and resulting collision have prompted considerable public response, with Habib’s family questioning law enforcement protocols during high-speed chases involving non-violent crimes like vehicle theft. Roseville police issued a statement expressing condolences and acknowledging an internal review into the chase is underway. Furthermore, the Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting an investigation to determine further details.
The 16-year-old suspect, believed to be part of an organized crime group targeting Macomb County neighborhoods, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and remains in custody at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center. Felony charges are expected.
