Child Killed, Others Hospitalized After Thanksgiving Crash on M-53 in Macomb County
A tragic Thanksgiving Day crash on southbound M-53 in Bruce Township left a 3-year-old child dead and three other people — including two adults and another child — hospitalized after a head-on collision. Police say the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Impala crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a northbound 2013 Chevy Impala around 5:20 p.m. on Van Dyke Avenue and Eberling Road intersection. The 3-year-old girl in the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 2-year-old brother, along with the driver and a passenger in the other car, were taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to state police, neither child was properly restrained — and only one car seat was found in the vehicle.
Responders from the Bruce Township Fire Department arrived amid heavy smoke and wreckage. They extricated occupants from both vehicles and began clearing the roadway while Michigan State Police began their investigation into what caused the Impala to cross lanes. No information has yet been released on possible impairment.
Crashes involving crossover and head-on collisions remain among the most lethal types, especially when children are involved or passengers are not properly restrained. On major highways such as M-53, drivers are reminded to remain alert, maintain safe distances, and ensure all passengers — especially children — are buckled and properly secured.
